I don't read a lot of Marvel comics anymore now that the Avengers are nothing like they used to be (both the team in general and the characters themselves specifically). I'm been keeping track of Thor, which is quite a nice book with wonderful art. And while I only vaguely kept track of the Secret Invasion thing, I did buy every single issue of Secret Invasion: Inhumans because I happen to have a weird love affair with that wacky royal family of theirs.
But this is not a post about Inhumans. No. This is a post about something far more important, something the Inhumans reminded me of.
( I love your pumpkin hair, Guy. )
The Rules:
-Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
-If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
-Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.
-Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
-If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free - do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just... wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
( Clubbin' Baby Toras under the cut )
Also! I can't believe that I completely forgot to pimp these! I looked at them a couple of weeks ago, got distracted by dogs, and then completely forgot to share and rave over their awesomeness!
That's pretty much exactly like I imagine him in the Cootieverse, little band-aid on his abused little face and all. I love these so much.
Whosoever can produce one or more nice Bea/Tora icons for me gets a drabble of some sort. I need to practice my drabbling skillz anyway.
Whosoever can produce a Bea/Guy/Tora icon wins the internet (and also probably something longer than a drabble).
I can see it in your eyes now. You all think I can't write anything that's less than 700 words, don't you?
...You're probably right. But that just means that my pathetic inability to be concise in my fic is your gain!
America needs a strong leader.
America needs someone who will stand up for what's right just because it's right, not because a religion or agenda told him to.
America needs a man who looks good in a belly shirt, cowboy boots, and who isn't afraid to cut his own hair.
America needs... GUY GARDNER.
( Guy Gardner is a man of character. Integrity. Finely-honed masturbation skills. )
I'm only ten prompts away from fulfilling my 80-prompt Guy Gardner claim, and five from fulfilling my much shorter Dibnys claim. I've quite enjoyed dcu_freeforall, and I've decided that, as soon as I finish one or the other of the claims I already have, I'm going to make a claim for the JLI. I haven't decided just how many prompts, yet, but I've decided to ask for some advice.
Anyone know any particular prompt tables, or any particular individual prompts, that you think would make for good JLI stories? Obviously my favorites are the Beetle/Booster/Fire/Guy/Ice version of the JLA, but technically the JLE also counts -- and of course any supporting characters from those books. While you're at it, now would be a good time to suggest any story ideas that you wouldn't mind seeing written on such a table. Basically anything that would help me set up or pick out a nice prompt table is welcome.
Hey... I need Bea/Tora icons.
I had occasion to consider Guy/Ted as a pairing recently (thanks boostle), and decided that it was probably the only JLI pairing that I just couldn't make happen in my head. You'd think it would at least be a possibility, given the tension that always existed between them (isn't tension something that we as fans love to turn into something sexual? I'll admit that I do.), but I just can't see it.
But it did get me to thinking about what pairings I can see, and why. I'm not saying that any of these actually happened, or even actually would happen, just that... well, let's put it this way: I think I could write them and folks would go "Oh hey, that sort of makes sense" rather than "...Where the hell did that come from?".
So let me be a pathetic fangirl for a moment and discuss my pairings that I really want to see written.
( Pairings beneath the cut, both canon and crack )So that's how I feel about something that really doesn't matter but is fun to think about anyway. Thoughts? Feelings? Ideas? Fic?
So...
( Murder under the cut )
The goal was to drabble out a few short little pieces in order to properly sort out the personalities of Guy and Tora's kids (who won't leave me alone), but I ended up writing way too much (as usual) and thinking really hard about the consequences of having kids when you're a semi-active superhero.
Wow, I'm feeling productive again for the first time in months.
I've written something a bit odd, and rather than cram another hugely long "Author's Notes" down your throats, I thought I may as well make a full-fledged post out of it prior to the posting of said story.
( Warning: This is really long )
EDIT: I HATE Livejournal and the way it continually randomly rearranges my posts. Seriously, what's up with that? It takes snippets of text and sticks them in the wrong place when it posts. Sometimes it's whole sections, sometimes it's just a couple of words.
I'll fix this shortly. In the meantime, this is filler because LJ screwed it up bad. Sorry.
EDIT AGAIN: The post as it is supposed to appear (I hope) follows. If it looks buggy, be aware that I'm working on it. I expect that LJ just hates it when I use bold or italics or colors at the beginning of a line, so I'm just gonna remove that and see if it works. It even screws it up just switching between rich text mode and HTML mode. Geez.
Work and life suck right now and I don't have a lot of free time, but have this sorta-fic inspired by the following (slightly altered to protect the innocent) snippet from an IM conversation about Green Lanterns naming their children:
Duskdog: But I can't see Guy giving his kids one of those trendy names. He'd pick something solid and manly. Bonus points if it's sorta-kinda Scandinavian, because Tora's still the heir to her kingdom's throne and all, and so their kids would be too. So she'd have to pick something that sounds good to her people, too.
Fizzlet: Ice Kingdom Priest: And I give you -- KING ZACHARY!
Duskdog: And like, the Ice Kingdom people can't even pronounce it right. So luckily, there's lots of good solid G-names that could have feasibly been integrated into the culture of the Ice People before they went all hermity up in their mountains. Gunnar, Garth, Gustav, etc.
Fizzlet: GUS GARDNER!
Duskdog: YES. Only his middle name is Rockford, and Guy calls him Rocky. Except when he's doing something bad, in which case Guy can yell (in his best, most redneck Baltimore accent): "GUS ROCKFERD, SIT YER ASS DOWN!"
Fizzlet: Overheard in Wal-Mart?
Duskdog: He's the fourth kid of five. After Gunnar, Garth, and Griffin. But before Peppermint Baby Grady.
Fizzlet: ...You've thought about this way too much, haven't you?
Duskdog: Possibly?
I miss the way they used to answer the letters in the old Guy Gardner comic's letters column as if they were Guy. There should totally be a Guy Gardner advice column. Maybe I'll do one.
Currently revising my Guy/Hal story for the puppy love prompt. Still working on Linda/Mary. Also toying with Cootieverse J'onn, another Stupidcat story, a "Guy goes to see his dying father after Booster Gold #2" story, a Hal/Kyle short piece, and contemplating some other prompts. I feel a strong need for some Guy/Kyle right now, but it's just not happening. Eh. Maybe soon.
My favorite screenshots other than Bea and Dinah's fight (which I'll have to share when I get my other comp properly hooked up to the internet): I have one of the entire JLI doing the smustle dance together in Guy's backyard. And I also have one of Guy and Hal, both in leopard print underwear, dancing on Hal's party porch.
Also, when I had Hal take Kyle out to the bowling alley, the first thing he did was walk out the back door of the place, take Kyle out into the alleyway, and talk about handcuffs. I got a good shot of that. Actually, now that I think about it, Hal talks about handcuffs a lot. Fetish? Maybe Kyle knows.
Well, that's how I'm feeling right now. I spent my vacation with a strange fixation on the Teen Titans in general and Ravager and Jericho in particular, then I got back and read the solicits for October's issue of Green Lantern Corps (TORA IS GOING TO PROPOSE TO GUY in GLC #29 -- if I could type this in big flashing letters, I would) so I got Guy on the brain again, and I've been listening to my Phil Collins collection, which always puts me in a strange mood, and... well, yeah. I have Guy being all angsty in my head right now. Why angsty? I have no idea.
I know I still have a couple of unanswered prompts from before that I'm working on, but I'm in dire need of something to jumpstart my muse, so... prompt me? Anyone I've written before is fair game (feel free to request someone I haven't written before, but I can't promise I know them well enough to do them justice). Any prompt, any genre, any rating. Weirdness and crazy pairings welcome.
Also, I'm seriously considering Max/L-Ron for the Body Switch prompt. And I haven't written any Marvel Comics characters in ages. Maybe I should dust Hank Pym off and do something (else) mean to him with one of these. Because you know Marvel isn't mean enough to him. (Grr.)
I've got a Guy and Ted fic to post later this evening, perhaps, if I ever finish editing it in the middle of all this other stuff I'm doing, but I wanted to get this out here before I forgot.
Stuff I'm crazy about currently:
Callings by
Spøkelse by 'rith - This isn't a new one, but I stumbled across it a few weeks ago and have reread it about twenty times. It's rather special for several reasons: one, it's a story featuring Tora; two, it's a story featuring Tora interacting with someone who isn't Guy or Bea; three, it's just awesome. I'm not a huge fan of Zatanna, but I love her patient interaction with Tora here. Check it out.
Now, my request:
Anyone know any good Tora fics? She's still in my brain, and I'm working on some things, but what I really want to do is read, and I know I have a rather short friends list compared to some of you. Maybe you've seen something that I haven't?
If you know of any, drop me a line here.
So I have Tora on the brain right now, which is why none of my other stories that I'm working on are really moving along at the moment. Tora, Tora, Tora, Tora, Tora. She won't leave me alone -- it's like the little Tora in my head is begging to be written as something other than an accessory/angst prop for Guy or Bea.
Because, y'know, she's probably one of my top ten favorite characters of all time, but I have a bad habit of only considering her in relation to her friend and her boyfriend, who also are both pretty high up in that top ten (you mean you couldn't tell?). But it's not only me! The writers have done the same, too. Though they aren't really to blame, either. Her personality isn't really in-your-face, she doesn't feel the need to jump into the spotlight to prove her toughness (though she did occasionally suffer from a bit of an inferiority complex in regards to her powers), and she's just a more passive sort of person -- as much by choice as by nature, I think. She can be tough when she wants to be, but she has a habit of letting stronger personalities overshadow hers.
But I'm working on lots of stuff, and so long as I'm making progress even if nothing is quite finished yet, I'm happy. I checked my prompt list, and would you believe that, out of my 80-prompt Guy Gardner claim for
I can't promise I'll get to everything, but I'll try. Just need to get the creative juices flowing again.
ALSO (ha ha, watch me sneak in some pimping) because I have perversion on my mind and want to read this stuff, don't forget
The JLI is reasonably popular these days. The characters have had a rough time of it the past few years, but they've been experiencing a revival lately. Resurrections of dead characters, popping up as a team in books like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, getting their very own long-overdue line of action figures from DC Direct... the JLI is everywhere! But while Booster and Beetle have their very own fan following, and Guy Gardner has his, Fire and Ice have been somewhat neglected. I think, of the two, Tora seems to have more fans even though she's been dead for quite a while and isn't regularly appearing in any books right now (hopefully that will soon change, because Tomasi has said that he "has plans" for Guy and Tora in the pages of Green Lantern Corps). Bea appears regularly in Checkmate, and has actually had some pretty interesting stories over there. So why does no one ever write about her?
Edit: Well, I guess technically I already spoiled it, but eh. Like I said, it's a four month old issue, and I hope that everyone who reads my LJ is keeping up with Green Lantern Corps. (You are, aren't you? Don't make me come over there!)
